Texas native Barry Corbin, who first hit the silver screen as John Travolta’s uncle in Urban Cowboy and has since appeared in more than 100 films and TV shows, was probably the most recognizable face on set. Also in the film were Richard Speight Jr. (The Agency, Band of Brothers, Speed), Stelio Savante (Manhatten Chase, Astoria , A Beautiful Mind) and Irma Hall (Nothing to Lose, Steel and Soul Food.)
“It was very exciting to be around these familiar faces,” Mangold said. “These people were awesome to be around and made me laugh off camera on more than one occasion.”
So what was it like for the life of an extra? Mangold began his day around 7 am and stayed until 10 pm. However, on two different occasions he was called in about 11 am and would only have to be there until 7 pm. But the long hours paid off, because he can be visibly seen in two different parts of the film – once as one of the people talking in the background of a room and a few other times as a passerby. Now you are probably thinking, “All of those hours for just a few scenes?” Well few people fail to realize just how many takes are necessary to get just the right shots for a film.
“There was definitely way more that goes into making a movie than I ever thought. It’s amazing how many takes and time it takes to just get a few minutes on film,” Mangold said. “I have a lot of respect for the people and the crew that made this film possible and would do it again if given the opportunity. I can’t wait to see the movie when it is released.”
